In the Fosen case, two wind power plants in Fosen, Trøndelag, have caused a conflict regarding the rights of reindeer herders. The Norwegian Supreme Court ruled in October 2021 that the permission for the wind power development violated the reindeer herders’ cultural rights under Article 27 of the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The wind power plants, Roan and Storheia, continued to operate despite the ruling. The case highlighted the vulnerability of the southern Sami culture and raised questions about interfering with cultural practices. The fate of the wind power plants remains uncertain, and reparations for human rights violations are required.

The wind turbines in Fosen are still in operation, causing significant frustration among the affected Sami people and others. 500 days after the unanimous Supreme Court decision, Sami youth entered the reception area of the Ministry of Oil and Energy and refused to leave. They were forcibly removed by the police three days later during the night. This escalated the action and led to extensive demonstrations and civil disobedience, including blockades of entrances to various government departments, reminiscent of the actions in the controversial Alta case.

Consert poster in support to the Fosen demonstrations in Oslo in 2023.

Multiple Sámi organizations joined forces to hold a solidarity concert for the Fosen activists. The event, organized within a few days, featured top Sámi artists and speeches by notable figures like Greta Thunberg. I was asked to design a poster for the support concert in connection with the demonstration. The design of the poster was inspired by Arvid Sveen’s poster for the «Stillamarsjen» and the unofficial tricolored Sámi flag.

The artwork was exhibited at the annual Juleutstillingen of Kunstnerforbundet in 2023 and at the Oslo Metropolitan University in 2024. The latter institution has acquired the artwork as part of its Sami art collection.
