Støtt Jillen Njaarke!

The Øyfjellet case is a conflict over wind power development at Øyfjellet in Vefsn municipality, involving Øyfjellet Vind A/S and Eolus Vind Norge Holding AS against the Jillen-Njaarke reindeer grazing district. The Helgeland District Court ruled against the reindeer district, ordering them to pay 1.76 million NOK in legal costs. This case has been scheduled twice before in Helgeland District Court and is now set for week 22 of 2024.

I was commissioned by Jillen-Njaarke to design a support poster to be used during the trials.

The conflict arises because the wind farm is located in a key migration route for the reindeer. The reindeer owners argue that it is impossible to move reindeer through a wind park due to the animals’ reaction to noise and movement, particularly in winter when ice can be thrown from the turbine blades. The wind power company disputes these claims, noting that the reindeer have been moved through the area without apparent negative effects.

Øyfjellet Wind Park is Norway’s largest wind park in installed capacity and the second largest in the number of turbines. Eolus Vind received final approval from NVE in 2021, after initial permission in 2014 and confirmation by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in 2016. The final turbine was operational in September 2022.
